In front of her house, there is a huge water oak. I love that tree. It was about seven years old when they moved it there, and so was I. That tree now towers over my aunt’s house. If any Oklahoma ice storm ever breaks it, it will block the street and lay in my parents’ lawn. So far, it has survived about five ice storms as well as multiple thunderstorms, numerous wind advisories, and at least two droughts.

I have boys in my little house. There are only three of them, but they feel like more when their rowdiness takes over the living room before they take it outside or when they take off their shoes or fill the kitchen with their need to cook and consume an extra meal. They are all home educated, and sometimes that is overwhelming.

I want these boys to be the Oak Tree kind of men that seek hard after Christ. I want their roots to be deep, so that they are not easily shaken when the earth quakes or the storm rages. Life is not easy. They need to be well-rooted in Christ, well-nourished in mind as well as body, and well-loved so that they have plenty of grace to share with the world. These are goals.

From Isaiah 61:

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,
because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes,
the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.

About Christa

I’m just a mom. I belong to Christ.

I belong with my husband. We have five sons. We have boisterous boys with whom we seek to live an educational life that seeks Truth, Beauty, Goodness, Wisdom, and Virtue.

I am Mom to five boys, but you’ll only see three tagging along with me. Danny (10/1999-02/2005) and Isaac (05/22/2009- 09/03/2009) were both born with a mitochondrial myopathy called COX-2 deficiency. They were created by God to change our generation. And they did. It’s amazing how smiles and laughter from children who have nothing else to give can transform a heart that nothing else touches. I am blessed to be their mother.

The less important stuff…. I love books, music, trees, the Oklahoma sky, food, and writing. I love to learn, and I love to teach. I look for beauty. And whenever I look, God shows it to me.

About Educating Oaks: I grew up living across the street from my aunt.
